Hockey Workouts for Goalies

HockeyOT.com is the only online training site that offers goalie specific workouts. When you become a subscriber to HockeyOT.com you are asked what position you play. Goalies are encouraged to select the goalie specific fitness training goal which creates a customized workout for a goalie. The customization doesn’t stop at just the position that you select. Your age, play level, previous fitness training experience, season progress and even the equipment that you have available are all factors in creating your customized workouts. No other online training program can offer that kind of customization. In fact, many trainers that offer hockey-specific training programs will not be able to provide this level of customization. If you are working with a trainer at the gym right now, he/she should be using the goalie-specific fitness parameter on HockeyOT.com to make sure you are getting maximum benefit from the workouts you are doing to improve your on-ice performance.

The goalie-specific HockeyOT workouts are focused on having the athlete work from the positions that they spend the most time in: the goalie crouch, kneeling, front plank and side plank positions. The goalie program focuses on core strength and endurance since a goalie needs to be on the ice for up to 3 hours per regulation game in the pros. We make sure all of our HockeyOT goalies have adequate leg strength and flexibility so that they are able to perform the butterfly position quickly and effectively. We also focus alot on balance and hand-eye coordination so important to the goaltender position.

I have had the opportunity to train and work with some of the best goaltenders in the NHL during my time with the Edmonton Oilers and now working in Los Angeles. My favorite part of working with goalies is their high compete level when performing off-ice training. One workout I was throwing a reaction ball to Oilers goalie Dwayne Roloson and he was actually diving on the hard workout floor to catch the unpredictable bouncing ball before it would get past him! It was during that workout that I realized how competitive an NHL goalie was and what it would take for a young progressing goalie to match this intensity.

Being a world-class goalie is more than simply playing angles and stopping pucks. The time spent off the ice working on the physical fitness necessary to be an elite goalie is a big part of being successful.
